Award history

The Sempre Conference Awards are intended to enable full-time students or part-timers who are non-wage earners to attend one of the Society’s conferences or a conference in association with Sempre through meeting the fee and the costs of travel and subsistence. Typically, we encourage online participation whenever feasible.

Purpose of the award

The Sempre Conference Awards are open to full-time and part-time students as well as unwaged delegates who have been accepted to give a spoken or poster presentation at one of the Society’s conferences, including those events in association with Sempre.

Total fund available

By negotiation.

Eligibility

Normally, applications can only be accepted from students and unwaged delegates (see eligibility above) who have been selected by the conference organising committee to give a presentation (spoken or poster). The status of the applicant (as full-time/part-time/unwaged) will be considered by the Sempre Awards Panel, taking into account the UN’s Human Development Index (HDI) rating of the applicant’s home country and/or country of residence. Applications will also be judged according to the importance of attendance at the conference for furthering the studies of the student or delegate concerned, and the likelihood of the applicant being unable to obtain funding from other sources.

Criteria

The Trustees consider the status of the applicant, the proposed travel arrangements in accordance with Sempre’s Environmental Policy, the conference being attended, and the conference organisers’ scoring of the applicant’s submitted proposal when making awards.

Process

Prospective Conference Organisers may apply to host a Sempre Conference or to run an event ‘In association with Sempre’. If this application is successful, the Conference Organisers are asked to distribute Sempre Conference Award Application Forms to delegates who have been accepted to present their work at the conference. Organisers will collate the applications and provide information about the relative strength of each applicant’s conference proposal. Applications should be sent to [email protected]. The Trustees will consider the applications according to the criteria outlined above and will inform the Conference Organisers of the outcome. Conference Organisers will inform delegates of the outcome of the their applications.

Feedback from award recipients

Successful recipients are expected to provide a brief summary of their research activities, including any fieldwork-related travel, outcomes, and how the award contributed to achieving their objectives. If possible, please also include any related images (with proper ethical approval) that we can share on our Sempre website. Apply

Applicants should apply to present a paper or poster to the conference concerned in the usual way and, if successful in being selected to present at the event, should then complete an official Sempre Conference Awards application form. These are normally available from the organisers of the conference or, less commonly, from the Sempre Conference Secretary. The conference organisers should normally be the first point of contact. The conference organisers are expected to notify delegates about the deadline for Sempre Awards applications, which is normally at least eight weeks in advance of the event, and also explain who is the main conference contact to receive the application. All applications will then be processed from the organisers via the Sempre Conference Secretary and considered by the Sempre Awards Panel. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by the conference organisers or Sempre Conference Secretary. The decision of the panel is final, and the Society regrets that it is unable to enter into any correspondence regarding its decision. Each application is treated individually according to the eligibility and criteria above. Previous applicants are not precluded from applying.
