Psychology of Music is a peer-reviewed journal that is published in print six times a year, and receives a large number of submissions across a broad range of disciplines related to the scientific understanding of psychological aspects of music. This includes research on listening, performing, creating, memorising, analysing, describing, learning, and teaching, as well as applied social, developmental, attitudinal and therapeutic studies. The Editor or Editors in Chief, in conjunction with SEMPRE and SAGE Publications, is/are responsible for setting the strategy and direction of the Journal with the support of the Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research (SEMPRE) and SAGE, the academic commercial publishers of the Journal. They oversee the peer review of manuscripts, supported by an editorial team which includes Associate (Action) Editors who handle manuscripts based on their areas of expertise, two paid Assistant Editors who handle author enquiries, initial submissions, final checks and editing of papers, an international Editorial Board, and SEMPRE and SAGE. The role includes management of the editorial team, recruitment and support of the Associate Editors, and oversight of all editorial decisions.

Applicants should be excellent and diplomatic communicators, self-motivated and highly organised, and with exceptional attention to detail. An excellent command of written and spoken English is essential. It is expected that applicants should have expertise across a broad range of appropriate disciplines, as well as some experience of academic publishing. We welcome applications from individuals or jobshare applications (with or without a partner). SEMPRE’s intention is that Journal Editorial teams should reflect the diversity of SEMPRE’s membership and include a variety of voices and perspectives, particularly those who are frequently underrepresented in academic publishing.

This is an unpaid position. SAGE take care of the use of the manuscript submission platform, typesetting, copyediting, and distribution. The royalties that SEMPRE get from SAGE for publishing the journal with them cover the cost of the paid Assistant Editors and the majority of these funds go towards the charitable aims of the Society, including supporting conferences, research visits, and research grants for early career researchers and those unable to access other funds.

Interested applicants should send a full CV, a list of two academic or other relevant referees, plus a 500 word statement of their vision for the future development of the Journal to Professor Graham Welch, Chair of SEMPRE (This email address is being protected from spambots. Enquiries are welcome to the current Editor in Chief, Professor Alexandra Lamont (This email address is being protected from spambots.
