Psychology of Music is a peer-reviewed journal that is published in print six times a year, and receives a large number of submissions across a broad range of disciplines related to the scientific understanding of psychological aspects of music. This includes research on listening, performing, creating, memorising, analysing, describing, learning, and teaching, as well as applied social, developmental, attitudinal and therapeutic studies.
The Editor in Chief is responsible for setting the strategy and direction of the Journal with the support of the Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research (SEMPRE) and SAGE Publications (the academic commercial publishers of the Journal). They oversee the peer review of manuscripts, supported by an editorial team which includes Action Editors who handle manuscripts based on their areas of expertise, a paid editorial assistant, an international Editorial Board, and the professional services of SAGE Publications. The Editor in Chief also manages the editorial team and leads on the commissioning of high quality review articles.
Applicants should be diplomatic communicators, self-motivated and highly organised, with exceptional attention to detail. An excellent command of written and spoken English is essential. It is expected that applicants should have expertise across a broad range of appropriate disciplines, as well as some experience of academic publishing. SEMPRE's intention is that our Journal Editorial teams should reflect the diversity of our membership and include a variety of voices and perspectives, particularly those who are frequently underrepresented in academic publishing.
This is an unpaid role. A proportion of the royalties from journal subscriptions flow back from SAGE Productions to SEMPRE to fulfil its charitable aims of fostering new research and assisting the work of new and established researchers (with over £1million awarded to date).
Interested applicants should send a full CV, a list of two academic or other relevant referees, plus a 500 word statement of their vision for the future development of the Journal to Professor Graham Welch, Chair of SEMPRE (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), by 31 October 2022, with a view to the position beginning in January 2023. Informal enquiries are welcome to the current acting Editor in Chief, Professor Alexandra Lamont (This email address is being protected from spambots.
